Ambra Senatore
« THE HUMAN ELEMENT RUNS THROUGH ALL MY PIECES. I SEEK A DANCE THAT CONNECTS WITH PEOPLE AND FOSTERS A HUMAN RELATIONSHIP, MAKING ROOM FOR FRAGILITY, DOUBT, CRITICAL THINKING, SHARING, AND HUMOR. »
Ambra Senatore, an Italian choreographer and performer from Turin, has been the director of the National Choreographic Center of Nantes since 2016. Her dance exists in that delicate space between the construction of action, the fiction within repetition, and the truth of presence. At the core of her movement lies everyday life, "observed under a magnifying glass," which she shifts and overturns until the gesture becomes fictionalized, until the dance becomes theatrical.
A fan of surprises, "cuts," and repetitions reminiscent of cinema, Ambra Senatore reconstructs reality like a filmmaker. She guides the spectator’s gaze, leaving it up to them to piece together the puzzle from this choreographic material and the clues she scatters. This way of juggling situations to the point of absurdity brings out a subtle irony.
In Italy, she trained with artists such as Roberto Castello and Rafaella Giordano, with whom she quickly began collaborating. As a performer, she also worked with Jean-Claude Gallotta, Giorgio Rossi, Georges Lavaudant, and Antonio Tagliarini. In the late 1990s, she created pieces in collaboration with other authors, then completed a PhD in contemporary dance (2004) before teaching dance history in Milan.
From 2004 to 2009, she focused her choreographic research on solos that she performed herself. EDA-solo, Merce, Informazioni Utili, Altro piccolo progetto domestico, Maglie, avant de passer à des pièces de groupe : Passo (2010) en version duo puis quintet, A Posto (2011), trio féminin et John (2012). With her company EDA, which she founded in 2012 in Besançon, she choreographed her first piece for young audiences based on a text by Fabrice Melquiot. Nos amours bêtes (2013), which was followed in 2016 by Quante Storie, a project from the "Au pied de la lettre" program, which she created as a mirrored composition with Loïc Touzé.
In 2014, she presented at the Lyon Biennale. Aringa Rossa, a piece for nine dancers featuring lifts, duets, and reassembled tableaux. Afterward, Pièces (2016), she created at the 2017 Avignon Festival Scena madre*, a performance for seven dancers in which she plays with cinematic codes.
When she took over the direction of the CCN of Nantes in January 2016, Ambra Senatore brought with her a dance style deeply connected to humanity, a way of engaging with people and places. In the Nantes area, she offered site-specific creations in schools (Petits pas and Pas au tableau) or museums, organizes events – Primavera, Festival Trajectoires –, choreographs the dance interludes of the opera. Cendrillon de Jules Massenet et se lance dans une Conversation (2019) with personalities and locals, to understand how dance can be integrated into the major contemporary societal debates.
In 2018, she co-wrote with dancer Marc Lacourt, Giro di pista, a participatory dance for children and families, followed by the duo, Il nous faudrait un secrétaire, scheduled for the fall of 2020. Ambra Senatore also created, in the same year, Partita, a series of duets for a dancer and a live musician, and invites the original team from her piece. Passo (2010) à s’investir dans Col tempo, a quartet where each individual, including the audience, is invited to make choices. In 2022, she continued her work on the creation of the short film. La Lingua al Gatto with photographer, visual artist, and videographer Bastien Capela, and recently created at the 2023 Trajectoires Festival, In Comune, a piece for 12 performers that questions living together.
A New Solo in the Repertoire
At the very beginning of her career, in the mid-2000s, Ambra Senatore experimented with various solo forms, from Eda à Merce to including Altro Piccolo progetto domestico or even Maglie. All of them already carried the recognizable markers of the dance that the Italian choreographer would later develop: the relationship between reality and fiction, the desire to bring forth everyday gestures, a taste for the burlesque, the playful contrasts oscillating between lightness and unsettling surprises, and a deep sense of humanity.
At the very moment when she is touring with her largest group piece, In Comune, which brings together 12 dancers, Ambra Senatore essentially returns to her roots and ventures once again into creating a solo piece. Not conceived as introspection or a need to retreat into oneself, but as a way to differently question, from her feelings, the relationship to others – and more fundamentally, our identity, what shapes and constitutes us. Between performance, participatory spectacle, and choreographic writing, the solo brings together, in a single gesture, people met along the way, memories, various and unusual objects... and a touch of Italy as well.

During the creation and working periods of her solo at the CCNN, Ambra Senatore opens the studio doors wide and invites you to attend the rehearsals and the creation process.
On Stage
Whether it’s solos or group pieces, Ambra Senatore's creations originate from everyday life, which she observes in great detail before transposing it into a surreal universe. In her works, where every gesture is thought out and controlled, the choreographer weaves a succession of clues, whose meaning continually evolves throughout the performance. Playful and clever, Ambra Senatore's dance is full of surprises.
Off Stage
Bringing dance out of the stage setting, going outside, engaging with the elements of a territory and a city, Ambra Senatore "seeks a dance that meets people." Markets, museums, libraries, parks and gardens, classrooms are, for the choreographer, true playgrounds. Whether she plays with words and gestures, creates bridges with the audience, or renews the relationship between dance and the world around us, Ambra Senatore's dance is all-terrain, capable of reaching audiences and infiltrating every corner.
